Spring tends to arrive a little later up here in the Highlands of Scotland! It has been a very busy few months, but as there are now lambs in the fields, the time has come to bring you the latest news and ideas from people=positive™.
In this edition of True North, we have included a piece called “Making it Stick”, which focuses on how you can create the conditions to ensure that learning and development programmes create sustainable, long term benefits. This is a key consideration when you are designing any kind of training and development plan, but one which is often neglected. We ran a workshop at Get Energy in Dubai on the subject and the feedback from the participants was excellent. I hope that you find this and everything else in True North interesting and useful.
As always, I would be delighted to receive your feedback.

News
people=positive™ Get Energy
Our trip to Dubai to attend Getenergy was a great success. The exhibition, only in its second year, was very well attended by many influential people from the oil and gas industry, all taking time to discuss the latest thinking in training and development in the sector. The exciting thing for us was that the common theme coming through the numerous workshops, was the importance of taking a values based approach to driving behavioural change – an area very close to our hearts!
people=positive™ go MAD with Network Rail.
A major safety initiative is well underway with Network Rail and its Framework Contractors. MAD (Make a Difference) is the ‘drive’ to develop an exceptional safety culture comprising five key areas:-
- ALPHA MODE OR AUTO PILOT
- DO WALK OVER, DON’T WALK BY
- TIME V RISK
- HABIT
- LEAD BY EXAMPLE/PERSONAL RISK
ASSESSMENT
Rod Pashley says “To achieve this across the UK is a bold and massive undertaking and has to be done ‘inside out’. Selecting MAD Champions (Coaches) from within Network Rail and the Framework Contractor Group is the key and people=positive™ are proud to be involved in training and developing the MAD Coaches through a series of intensive 4 day programmes followed up 1 month later with a 24 hr. ‘Health-Check’ to support progress and encourage ‘story telling’ and the sharing of learning”.
The coaches travel to the worksites and engage the workforce in the 5 elements of MAD, followed by in depth discussions about how improvements in safety, and in particular safety behaviour, can be achieved.
people=positive™ in Norway
We have gained a lot of experience working in Norway over the last few years, and that is set to take a very big step forward with our appointment by Vetco Norway to deliver a year-long programme of attitudinal safety workshops for over 500 staff. This work builds on a similar programme that we ran for Vetco in Aberdeen and further strengthens our strategic relationship with this major oil and gas services company.
A Word to the Wise
Eastern Wisdom
There are some great lessons in the success of our work with Exxon Neftegas in Korea.
For the last 9 months people=positive™ has been involved in facilitating a series of planning workshops in Korea for Exxon Neftegas to support the Hook-Up and Commissioning Team involved with the Chayvo Onshore Processing Facility on Sakhalin Island. This massive site will produce oil and gas to supply the Russian Far East and international markets. With construction well under way, the objective of the workshops is to ensure that the Hook-Up and Commissioning Team successfully transfer and install all modules and deliver a flawless start-up for the processing facility.
The Vision: ‘World Class Project Execution – Commit Yourself!’

A joint team from Engineering, Construction, Commissioning and Start-Up has been working together to create the best conditions for success – including an integrated schedule that will keep the process on track. Our role in these 3-day interactive workshops, has been to develop the team, introduce working processes and help to sustain momentum and energy. The last workshop held in Busan, South Korea, included a trip to the HHI shipyard in Ulsan where the huge modules were in the final stages of fabrication prior to being shipped on barges to Sakhalin. Video cameras were to create video-diaries of the tour around the modules to capture any observations that would help to prepare the team better for their arrival on-site in Chayvo.
The keys to the success of these interventions have been:
► Early involvement of all parties in the process.
► Strong, listening leadership from key players across the integrated team.
► A clearly focused agenda prepared well in advance.
► A balance between reflective and active sessions during the programme.
► Interactive and visual processes to bring the subject matter to life.
► Quality recording of the outputs and flow of the workshops to ensure robust
follow-through.

Making the learning stick in training and development is a key factor in creating sustainable development within an organization. The challenge is to create the climate for success – a climate where teams and individuals are ready, able and motivated to embark on their change journey. We always make a point of working with our clients to make sure that these conditions are present, for one simple reason: if they are not, then you can end up in worse shape than when you started!
So, when you are pulling together an organizational development programme, what exactly are the conditions for success? Conversely, and what is the danger of not having them present?
- Focus (or you will get confusion)
- The right skills (or you will get anxiety)
- Dealing with the right issues (or you will get frustration)
- Commitment form everyone involved (or you will get lethargy)
- A clear delivery plan (or you will get a false start)
