We have launched True North to share some of the insights we gain as performance coaches with many leading UK and international organisations.
True North will be winging its way to you every couple of months. The good news - it is not just about blowing our own trumpet! With every issue we will aim to challenge, inspire and motivate.
If you want to talk to us about any of the ideas contained in True North, or if you would like someone else to receive a copy, then please email me on office@peoplepositive.com or call on 01479 811900.

 15 years on …and the journey gets even more extraordinary.
Rod Pashley, MD & Founder of people=positive™

2004 was another fantastic year for people=positive™. We formed strong relationships with new clients, expanded into new overseas markets, welcomed new members to the team, developed powerful new tools and … to cap it all, we celebrated our 15th birthday.

It has been a truly extraordinary journey. From the early days working at the kitchen table in Fort William to delivering programmes across the world from our base at Inverdruie House, our passion for helping people to realize their potential continues to grow and grow.
So what makes the people=positive™ approach special? Client feedback shows that unlike competitors, our highly tailored approach makes genuine connections with our clients and their issues. People, whether they are in large or small organisations, can often find change of any sort very tough indeed. We design and deliver experiences that break through the barriers, make the complex simple and inspire positive action. What's our secret? Simple - a unique team that are totally committed to finding the right solutions.

News
people=positive™ around the world
We are committed to supporting our clients wherever they are in the world. In 2004 we covered a staggering number of air miles, with projects in Egypt, West Africa, The Gulf of Mexico, Russia, Norway, Abu Dhabi, Paris, Norway, Houston and Japan. 2005 has got off to a great start, with work in Baku, Holland and the Middle East. Not bad for a small company based in the Highlands of Scotland!

people=positive™ crosses the pond
In the spring of 2005, we will be opening a new office in Houston, Texas. Tony Mitchell will be relocating there with his family to spearhead the operation and already there is a lot of interest from both our international clients and US based companies.

people=positive™ Associate workshops.

We continue to invest in our team of Associates who support our work worldwide. We are committed to only working with the highest quality of individuals and we all get together regularly to share experiences and to learn from each other. We ran exciting in-house workshops in 2004 with more planned for 2005.

people=positive™ tools

In 2004 we created and developed ‘Success Map'© and the ‘Performance Iceberg'©. These ‘tools' deliver powerful new possibilities for strategic planning and managing project performance. Thanks to those clients who were patient as we developed workable models and who have now successfully embraced the tools into their own businesses.

A word to the wise
Our Top Truths of Leadership Development

We have learned a lot in our first 15 years. Here, in no order of priority, are the highlights:

Sustainable change has to be “Inside-Out”

Long–term organisational change is only possible when individuals accept personal responsibility for ‘being' the change themselves.

Great leaders lead by example

Any Leadership Team must be clear and consistent about key ‘cultural' messages. They must be the role-models for, “what ‘good' looks like around here.”

People work better when they are having fun

It's that simple!

Workshops are fine but the workplace is where it counts

The better you are at transferring learning from workshops back in to the workplace, the greater your return on investment will be.

Actions speak louder than words

Practical outcomes and ongoing development support are the keys to success.

Personal choice is the key to greater commitment

We believe in ‘challenge by choice'. When people choose to get involved, their commitment to success will always be far greater.

To change behaviour, first you have to explore and understand values & beliefs
With over 600 people having attended our Safety Leadership Programmes (over the past 3 years), we know that to change behaviour, you first need to address the values and beliefs that determine how and why people behave in the way they do.

Great leadership is more than just top down

Supervisors and Project Managers need a lot more than just technical management ability to create high performance teams. They must be able to engage and inspire diverse groups of people. Our new people=positive™ leadership programmes will meet this challenge.

1:1 Coaching is the secret to unlocking true leadership potential

Top athletes always use coaches, so why don't top business people? As skilled performance coaches, people=positive™ work with individuals to make sure they get the best from themselves and others.

At people=positive™ we have always had a passion about youth development but now we have taken things to a whole new level with the launch of eXtend, the people=positive™ Youth Development Trust.
Over the past few years we have been supporting the youth development organization, Fulcrum Challenge, through making regular donations/sponsorship to individual young people who embark upon personal development projects, and more recently personal development weekends for Fulcrum candidates.
We have now launched eXtend, our own Youth Development Trust. Our aim is to “inspire extraordinary journeys for young people'. We shall be working closely with local high schools to provide personal and social development opportunities for pupils.

Lucy Bale, a 23 year old graduate from Dorset has been recruited as the Trust's Youth Co-ordinator. She will be working closely with teachers and pupils at local schools to tailor support to their needs.
You will hear a lot more about eXtend from Lucy in the next issue of True North.

Experiential Learning – A lot more than just a load of old planks

Barney Mackie – Director of Innovation

With over 30 years of experience at the forefront of designing and facilitating experiential tasks, one thing we have learned is that when you design the right task for the right situation, the learning opportunity is huge. As the great American poet Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote: “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions."
At people=positive™, experiential tasks are central to the ‘discovery learning' process. They allow teams to put theory in to practice by experimenting with new ways of working together.
Whenever we use experiential tasks, we always remember to make sure that:
  • They are totally relevant to the objectives of the programme.
  • The learning is transferred back into the business context
  • Everyone in their own special way has a contribution to make.
  • They are designed to be sensitive to cultural, physical and gender differences.
We are very passionate about the challenge of designing new tasks to keep our approach fresh and ‘alive'. Watch this space because 2005 will see even more innovation.
February 2005.
