Rig of the year award for people=positive™ client
Transocean's 711 drilling rig, which is currently on a long term contract with Central Mature Assets, has won the semi-submersible category in Shell's prestigious global Rig of the Year competition. A major part of the judging criteria is HSE performance. Hugh Scott, Shell EPE's Senior Well Engineer for the 711, has said that one of the major contributory factors in the rig's excellent HSE performance – and therefore in the winning of the award – was the use of facilitating company, people=positive™. “We'd worked with them previously but only at contract start-up,” explains Hugh. “This time we've used them pretty much continuously and had the entire rig management team involved. What is significant is that we had complete buy-in – everyone taking ownership was the key.”
New Director joins people=positive™

Houston office opens
Tony Mitchell and his family relocated to Houston in August, to provide local support for our US based clients. He is rapidly building the capability, identifying local people to support us and finding some excellent venues that offer the right environment for accelerated learning. “Since being on the ground here, local companies and people have experienced a tough time during this Hurricane season. Katrina has been so devastating for the New Orleans people and had a big impact on production facilities for many companies. It's sobering to be part of this experience.”
If you would like any assistance for your American activities, please contact Tony via email: tm@peoplepositive.com .
A new look for peoplepositive.com
We have redesigned our web site to reflect the dynamic growth of our business. As we work with an ever greater variety of clients, we have recognized the opportunity for the web site to be more than just a source of contact and information. Click on to www.peoplepositive.com, and you will see a video featuring some of our key clients talking about their experiences working with us, as well as full details on everything we do, plus a new section where we now have the option of developing bespoke areas for the participants in client programmes. Please let us know what you think.
Extraordinary Voyages
Ezra's Sister Ship
From spring 2006 people=positive™ will be offering development workshops aboard the new wooden sailing vessel Ezra. In partnership with one of our Associates, Ezra's skipper Dr Sam Brooke, the workshops will be based on the West Coast of Scotland. Ezra is based on a traditional Isles of Scilly pilot cutter and can carry a crew of up to 10. The workshops will be individually tailored to suit small leadership teams, who will be able to work together in a beautifully designed vessel, in one of the best sailing regions of the world. Please see www.sailezra.co.uk for more information about the boat and contact Sam on sb@peoplepositive.com or the people=positive™ office office@peoplepositive.com for details.
A word to the Wise
Making it Stick!
We are very proud to be associated with the Transocean 711's success in winning their “Rig of the Year” award.
Part of the story has been creating a framework to sustain the focus on the conditions for success. We call it “making it stick.” Here are some simple steps that you can think about to help “make it stick” with your team:
- Involve your team in generating a detailed plan for success in the early stages of your journey, and make sure that this is revised and updated regularly. Have clear strategy for reviewing progress and adjusting strategy and tactics as you move towards your goals
- Develop a relationship with a performance coach to meet with the leadership team for regular “Pit Stops”, and to provide facilitation support as the team review their progress and adjust strategy and tactics. This “outside” support will help you to step back from the challenges and focus on your strategic leadership role.
- Make sure that different key team members are also involved in this forum by rotating attendance. This will ensure that the team remains engaged and that a variety of perspectives are reflected.
- Keep the wider crew involved by holding regular social and performance-focused events.
- The leadership team should always set the tone for success for other supervisors and team members, with consistently positive behaviour. An open and inclusive style will pay long-term dividends as individuals take personal ownership of the team's goals and plans.
