Technip Offshore
Safety Leadership Training

Background
Technip Offshore, part of one of the world’s largest oil industry engineering groups, provides sub-sea construction services for the oil industry. Operating in the North Sea and worldwide, they have a very diverse multi-cultural workforce. In 2004 they asked people=positive™ to develop a Safety Leadership Training programme to allow them to engage in the pan-industry ‘Step Change for Safety’ initiative.
Issues
How to improve safety leadership performance and create a safe working culture across a diverse workforce in a worldwide operation?
Solution
Recognising the importance of commitment from the entire workforce, people=positive™ designed a programme that would be attended by all levels including senior management. Participants were encouraged to question their personal attitude to safety leadership and to create and present their own personal ‘safety case’.
Coaching was used throughout the company to ensure that improvements in Safety Leadership were fully implemented in a sustainable way.
Results
There has been a marked reduction in ‘Days away from work’ incidents. Feedback shows that there has been a significant change in attitude towards safety at work and overall there has been a healthy and positive shift in Technip’s working culture.
John Greensmyth (HSSE Team Leader) of Technip says,
“The SLT programme has had a major impact on the safety environment within Technip. people=positive are great in helping to simplify even the most complex of issues. They really get people thinking and that is when you can start to see the potential for real long-term change.”
