BP Sullom Voe Terminal
Team Leader Development Programme

Background
At its peak, Sullom Voe Terminal handled 1.42 million barrels of oil per day.  By 2002, having been in operation for more than 20 years, it was facing many uncertainties for the future.  Morale in the workforce was low and benchmarked performance had slipped, especially in safety.  Major changes were needed to pull the performance up.  A management reorganisation saw the appointment of many new Team Leader posts.  BP asked people=positive™ to deliver a programme to help the new Team Leaders to drive performance improvement at the terminal.

Issue
How to develop the Team Leader’s skill and motivation to drive the changes necessary to create a sustainable and top performing site?  Failure to do this may have shortened the life of the terminal by 5 – 10 years.

Solution
A bespoke 12 month programme, attended by 40 people, designed to engage the Team Leaders behind the need for change and to align them behind a common vision for success. Delegates received specific training Modules on Safety, Performance and People Leadership. As an output from the each module, all participants signed individual personal commitments to implement the learning.

Results
Overall benchmarked performance improved and in addition, many improvements have been made and safety performance has dramatically improved.  There has been a continuous spell of more than 2 years without a DAFWAC.

Gunther Newcombe,  (BP North Sea De-Commissioning Manager) says,

"right from the word go, people=positive™ really connected with the team.  As a result of the programme, the Team Leaders were inspired to break down obstacles and make improvements happen."
